Celebrating Renewal and New Beginnings

A year ago, Joseph & Mary’s Home realized a longtime dream of our founders, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, with the opening of a second facility to care for women experiencing homelessness who need a safe place to recover after surgery or hospitalization.

Spring is a celebration of renewal and new beginnings. At Joseph & Mary’s Home, we offer hope, renewal and resources for men and women who have persevered through unimaginable challenges. Last year, we helped nearly 120 people who came to us with nowhere else to go regain their health and access housing resources.

Your support provides people experiencing homelessness with a place to heal. People like Kathy and Karolin.

For these two sisters, spring reminds them of their father’s rose garden and his ability to propagate something new and beautiful from a cutting. Now in their new apartment overlooking the West side neighborhood where they grew up, they are grateful to be well and to have each other.

“Our parents were adamant that we are family and that we stick together,” Kathy said.

When both sisters suffered strokes, the hospital referred them to Joseph & Mary’s Home so they could stay together while healing. Community health workers on staff then connected them to additional health and housing resources.
“I enjoyed the poetry group, art therapy and counseling,” said Karolin. She continues to write and many of her poems are filled with beautiful memories of home.

As the first and only medical respite provider in Northeast Ohio, Joseph & Mary’s Home restores residents’ physical strength, emotional strength and most importantly, a sense of hope.

An important part of this work is developing a housing plan with each resident with an understanding of their individual needs and barriers they may face to finding housing. Staff helped Kathy and Karolin locate an assisted living residence. They are also working with Legal Aid and the City of Cleveland to get back their family home.

As Joseph & Mary’s Home has expanded to help more men and women begin a next chapter in their journeys, please consider increasing your support of our organization to support healing and hope.

Kathy and Karolin have taken turns lending each other strength. At Joseph & Mary’s Home, they found a community who supported them individually and as sisters.

Staff and volunteers continue to stay in touch with Kathy and Karolin now that they have found housing. At Mary’s Home, they asked to be baptized together. They continue to grow in their faith and stay connected to the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. Joseph & Mary’s Home will always be a special place for them.
